dropping the Dixie

I have recently started a new playlist on my YouTube account entitled WTF 2020.

The first song is from The Chicks, formerly known as The Dixie Chicks.

It’s a bold move, but like the song says: “Half of you love me. Half already hate me.”

I’m including a poem about my love-hate relationship with my Southern heritage.

Ultimately, I have decided that you can be southern/country without being Southern.

Don’t believe me? Here are three bands who say otherwise. Respectively from Colorado, central Canada and England.

A better day is coming, when white America apologizes to black America (and red America) and we all decide to be good human beings to each other. Amen.

banjo

oh, my Dixie brothers,
it’s past time we end
this notion that
we were on
the right
side.

so strum those bittersweet
strings which I love with
their haunting and
stark, dark truth
of our
hate

(we stole from the children
of West Africa
and we made its
righteous sound
from their
pain),

and don’t ask me to lie;
I bear a mark of sin
which I accept
as daughter
of the
South.

Hours I own all of these ideas, but none of these images.
